Have you read “Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell”? I think it matches what you’re looking for, since the writing is close to Neil Gaiman’s, it has rival magicians like “The Prestige”, the humor is nonsensical, and it features an original story interwoven with historical facts like your previous work.
