I feel so tremendously seen by this essay.

Feeling like a fool for a few hours every week-- or in my case, as it was when I studied abroad the first time, most of every hour of every day-- completely changed my on what is valuable in life. The ongoing humiliation was so good for me. As a language lover, being stripped of language proficiency also stripped me of my ability to use that proficiency as the linchpin of my identify, and I feel like it helped me clue in to exactly what you identify here: compassion. Compassion is the most important quality you can bring to every interaction, every day.

I feel like our culture would be less addicted to comfort if we could embrace shame and humiliation as the tools that they are, and embrace that we are the clay, not the potter.
